UNP Uva Provincial Chief Ministerial candidate Harin Fernando has said that the recent reports of a secret meeting between him and UPFA Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa are baseless.

Speaking to BBC Sandeshaya, he has said that he and Namal Rajapaksa had played rugby together and therefore were good friends. While he criticized the present regime vehemently, this has not been a problem for personal friendship with Namal Rajapaksa, he says.

Fernando has also told local media that the meeting was a casual one and did not last more than five minutes. Namal Rajapaksa had wished him well for his Chief Ministerial campaign, Fernando had said.

According to local media reports, several other government ministers had been there and it was Rajapaksa who had invited Fernando to come over for a visit.

“We bumped into each other while campaigning and he wished me to become the next CM. It is very evident that the government has got scared a lot. No matter what I am UNP and will be UNP till I die.” Harin Fernando had said on his facebook page.
