The Sri Lankan government is likely to release all the Indian fishermen in its custody before August 2.
With the apprehension of 50 fishermen from India the Tamil Nadu ministers and the fishermen of Rameswaram made a motion named ‘Journey for Justice’. Various requests have been made t Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the situation.
But releasing the fishermen alone is unlikely to satisfy the Indian fishermen and the Tamil Nadu government as they are demanding the release of the fishermen and their boats as well - which the Sri Lankan government has sternly declined.
The Sri Lankan government made a statement to media saying that the Sri Lankan Navy will immediately arrest any foreign national who illegal cross the Sri Lankan maritime border.
North Lankan fishermen told international media that they have no plans to confront the Indian fishermen. Adding to that they also told that they fully support the Sri Lankan government’s policy towards Indian fishermen.
N Devadasan, leader of the Rameswaram Fishermen’s Cooperative Society, said that when driven by hunger, the fishermen could do anything.
Speaking to Indian media he has said that “We know we will be arrested, but it is better to be in jail in Sri Lanka and be fed there, than remain hungry in India”.
Currently, there are 94 fishermen and 62 boats in the custody of the Sri Lankan Government.
The Sri Lankan Navy will take “rapid action” to thwart the expected mass influx of Tamil Nadu fishermen into Lankan waters on August 2.
