A police constable attached to the Borella police station - who has a service record of nearly 28 years - lodged a complaint against the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka saying he was assigned to clean the police station despite his seniority in the service.
The incident created a controversy among rank and file of the police service as duties such as cleaning police stations are usually handled by minor staffers and not by police officers who have nearly three decades of experience.
A private TV station had secretly recorded a video clip when the senior officer was cleaning the police station. After the video was aired during the main news bulletin of the TV station, the Police headquarters had taken measures to interdict the police constable on the grounds that he violated the disciplinary code of the service.
In his complaint, the police constable has said his human rights have been violated when he was interdicted by the Police Department.
The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, chaired by Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa, is now probing into the incident. The commission has promised the Police Constable to conduct an impartial investigation into the matter and mete out justice to him.
