At least three gunmen have reportedly attacked Bacha Khan University in northwest Pakistan, injuring several people. Students and teachers were alleged to have been present on the premises at the time of the attack.

There are around 3,000 students at Bacha Khan University, Vice Chancellor Fazal Raheem told the media. He said none of them have so far been reported hurt in the attack, Daily Pakistan reported.

Pakistan’s Geo TV station is citing local police who say firing can be heard coming from inside the university. According to the channel's reporter on site, five injured people were taken off the premises. The armed men are reported to be hiding on campus. A heavy police presence is also reported on the site of the attack.

There were also reports of two explosions heard from inside the university.

Bacha Khan University is located in the suburbs of Charsadda, a district capital city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the turbulent northwest of Pakistan. The province has seen regular clashes between the Pakistani Army and fighters of the Pakistani Taliban militant movement in the past.

In December 2014, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Peshawar was the site of one of the deadliest terrorist attacks seen in Pakistan. In that incident, a group of Taliban insurgents raided a school for children of military officers, killing 148 people, most of them children.
