The foreign minister of the Maldives says a monthlong state of emergency declared by the president last week may be lifted early.
Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon said by phone Monday from the Maldives' capital, Male, that information from defense officials give hope that the state of emergency could be reviewed in the coming days.
Maldives declared a state of emergency onNovember 04, as the Indian Ocean island nation’s political upheaval intensified following a suspected assassination attempt on the president.
Citing a threat to national security, the foreign ministry said that the state of emergency would remain in force for 30 days.
