The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development has decided to establish a boat yard in North with a view to manufacturing and repairing boats and thereby developing fisheries in the area. The proposed estimate for this project is Rs. 285 million.
Beaten by the war of 30 years, people in North were not targeted by any development project during past times and such situation has led specially the fisher community in North to grievous difficulties.
In view of such circumstances, the Ministry has initiated implementing multiple measures for developing the fisheries industry in the Northern Province. Accordingly, Sri Lanka’s largest fishery harbour will be built in Point Pedro and an aquaculture park of 2500 hectares will be constructed in Mannar.
Further, the proposed boat yard will be established in Karainagar, Jaffna and inaugurated under the patronage of Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera on 22nd August 2016 with the participation of the Hon. Ministers Dilip Wedaarachchi, Reginald Cooray, C. V. Vigneswaran and Vijayakala Maheswaran.
